The Teaching of Adversity

John 16:33 NIV "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

What a great verse this is. In this verse we see such awesome truth for us to live with. In this world, we are going to have adversity come our way. It is inevitable that we are going to have times of pain and sorrow but we can take heart during these times as well. We can be of good cheer because Christ has defeated the world and He will give us the strength for the journey.

There are some who teach and believe that once a person is born again, their troubles will cease. They believe that God will magically make them rich, happy, and healthy. This is simply un-biblical. We are going to have adversity in this life but Jesus will give us strength. He will walk with us through it. If we trust in our own power, we will not succeed. Let us look to Jesus for the strength in our moment of adversity. Let us take heart and be of good cheer in our times of adversity for Christ has overcome this world and its problems. How big is God? Big enough and then some.

The most difficult thing for me is to allow God to do what He does best...take care of me. I don't have to always be in control because He is in control of all I need to accomplish in my life.

I hope to have the courage to one day step into the role He has laid out for me without feeling unworthy and asking "Why ME?"

Thanks Leia for sharing. You are right, it is often difficult for us to let God have His way with us. God is a great God and He IS in control. I pray that God will bring you to the place He has for you.

Thank you, Pastor Mark. It seems to be more difficult in today's tumultuous times to take the "leap of faith" and step into the role God has laid out for us. On my part, I will become involved in an effort and truly believe this is what I am to be doing, then doubt myself, step back, and look for something else to become involved in...I am very confused what I am supposed to do.

I think I have heard God speak to me, yet then I try to analyze did I truly hear Him, or was it my own wishful thinking. I don't know what holds me back from becoming involved with the church and community. I can definitely talk the talk, but to walk the walk is very difficult. I guess I need to take babysteps...any suggestions?

I do some volunteer work in the community and have begun trying to help a family in my neighborhood but I know there is more God is asking of me. I just cannot figure out what keeps holding me back.

Leia, taking baby steps is the way to go when you are unsure. You may feel like it isn't enough but God will show you. If you are unsure, then pray for confirmation and then go forward with what God shows you. If you know what you are to do and are just not doing it, then step out in faith. God can give you peace to know what you are to do. Don't be afraid, trust God.
